The HCPC Standards of Proficiency describe the threshold knowledge, skills and behaviours required for safe and effective practice in each regulated profession. The biomedical scientist standards are mapped across the Version 5.0 portfolio modules. Candidates demonstrate them through the combined portfolio evidence, workplace assessment and verification discussion.

Do not treat a standard as a label to attach after evidence has been written. Read its wording carefully. Identify the action, understanding or behaviour it requires, then locate where the evidence actually demonstrates that requirement.

Questions to ask when reading a standard

• Is the standard asking me to understand, recognise, demonstrate, practise, maintain or evaluate something?
• Does it require knowledge, observable practice or both?
• What evidence would allow another professional to see that I meet it?
• Which part of my proposed evidence provides that proof?
• What additional explanation or trainer observation may be needed?
