Estimated study time: 9 minutes

Learning objective: Select varied evidence types from authentic workplace learning.

Evidence type What it can demonstrate Example
Reflective account Learning, judgement and change in practice. Handling a critical result or learning from an error.
Case study Scientific understanding, interpretation and patient pathway. Diabetes monitoring, anaemia investigation or infection diagnosis.
Audit or service review Quality improvement, data handling and action planning. Turnaround time, sample rejection or documentation compliance.
Annotated result or image Interpretation, limitations and decisions. Haemolysed potassium, blood film, culture plate or histology image.
Presentation or poster Communication and professional learning. Explaining IQC, specimen quality or health and safety.
Competency with commentary Observed practice plus understanding. Analyser, microscopy, culture, staining or molecular workflow.
CPD summary Planned learning and application to practice. Guideline review followed by local practice discussion.

Routine work is often the richest evidence source. Notice events such as troubleshooting, quality review, sample rejection, urgent communication, equipment maintenance, method evaluation, incident discussion, training delivery or multidisciplinary collaboration. Capture a brief note while the event is fresh, then discuss whether it is suitable evidence.

  1. Notice a potentially useful activity.
  2. Check confidentiality and local permission.
  3. Record the context and your personal contribution.
  4. Save an approved artefact or contemporaneous notes.
  5. Add annotation, references and reflection.
  6. Map it to the correct module and standards.
  7. Ask the trainer to review whether it demonstrates the intended outcomes.

Learner activity

Complete an “evidence opportunity scan” for the previous two weeks. Record three events, what you did and which module might be relevant.

Key points

  • Use a variety of evidence types.
  • Routine work can become evidence when context and learning are explicit.
  • Capture opportunities promptly but assess suitability before upload.
